Hookah Modules and Parts
Connectors and Various
Beta & Cosmetically
In the early stages of product development, we weighed the pros and cons of using glass vs using plastic. As it turns out, plastic has far more redeeming qualities than glass:
Durability: Plastic pipes have a much higher resistance to breaking
Reproducibility: injection molded parts hold the same tight tolerance, hand blown glass has high variability
Interface Method: Standard Taper fittings in glass must be supported from below and require vertical orientation to work, threads work in any orientation and stay together when lifted from above
Cost: We offer TT modules at less than half the price of comparable glass pipes
Weight: Our modules are 1/5th to 1/10th the weight of glass pipes
Benefits of using glass:
Familiarity: people are used to glass, but it is not the only answer
If you are okay with drinking soda out of plastic bottles, then Transformer Tube is safe to use.
There are two concerns related to smoking with plastics. One is the heat melting plastic and releasing fumes. When properly used, the Transformer Tube will never come in contact with enough heat to cause a problem. The flame of the lighter only touches glass and will not conduct down the glass to sufficiently heat the plastic. Burning embers can pull through the bowl, but as long as the base has water, they will be extinguished before touching plastic.
The second concern is plasticizers. When food or beverages sit in plastic for long periods of time, plasticizers will be released. Smoke travels through the tube fast, which does not allow time for leaching. Some leaching may occur into the water, but it is not ideal to consume used pipe water.
Our bases have a 19mm Standard Taper on them, so they work with an industry standard 19mm glass-on-glass downstem (100mm in length for the straight section). You can get downstems and bowls on this website or from a local retailer, most towns have several. Tell them you have Transformer Tubes.
When we chose the diameter of the tubes, there were several considerations. A smaller diameter makes for a smaller total chamber size, that way you can build a bigger pipe without it quickly getting unreasonable to actually use. Another reason relates to fluid mechanics and these factors are detailed in a white paper we hope to publish soon.
Transformer Tubes are constructed of Polycarbonate, a durable, safe thermoplastic polymer. PC goes uses the resin code 7, for other, and is not currently commonly recyclable. We hope to have a more recyclable option, but until then please recycle if possible, or discard in trash.
Disassembly of modules aids greatly in cleaning. Take modules apart and soak in Isopropyl alcohol. Most residues are alcohol soluble, making it degrade and come off module surfaces easily. Polycarbonate is resistant to alcohols and should not be affected.
Hookahs, dating back to the 1500′s, have had one general style of construction: a base with water that is connected to a lid that allows smoke passage. Usually, this consists of two parts. Standard pipes have a single part construction. One and two part devices have several significant drawbacks, such as making it difficult to prepare, clean, transport or store and impossible to interchange or replace. Most importantly, this limits the amount of configurations to one.
::Build-A-Bong:: By splitting the smoking device into multiple components, we are able to solve several shortcomings of the one and two piece pipes/hookahs. And, even though Transformer Tubes are made out of polycarbonate, they still have a glass bowl & downstem for an incredibly smooth, familiar hit.
::Incredible convenience at every step:: Pipes and hookahs can be difficult to safely and unerringly fill and empty of water. Often, a piece will be longer than the sink basin, meaning the pourer must implement risky techniques to safely drain the water. Each module can be disassembled from the other modules, and are sufficiently sized to be filled under a faucet or safely drained.
::Shatterproof & durable:: Percolators, Ice Catchers, and other glass accouterments often break, and while the pipe is still useful, it’ll have lost much of its former glory. Transformer Tubes implements a modular design made from polycarbonate plastic, so replacing a broken or missing module is far cheaper than purchasing an entirely new pipe.
::Easily fit a 10′+ bong in your backpack:: Transportation of pipes and hookahs often puts the piece at risk of breaking. Also, some pieces can’t be readily transported due to sheer size. You are able to quickly and efficiently “break down” your hookah or pipe into disassembled modules for transportation ease and security.
::EASY Cleaning:: Cleaning percolators and large pipes and hookahs is often time consuming and difficult. Modularization allows for easy cleaning of all parts. Importantly, you can use Isopropyl Alcohol & salt, 420 cleaner, a dishwasher, dish soap, or other alcohol-based cleaner. Do not use acetates such as acetone (nail polish remover), as this will turn your polycarbonate white.
